How much water do you really need daily?

How much water do YOU drink daily?

Some people drink almost none, some are more conscious of their health and try to drink an extra glass here and there. And then there is another group of people that go for about 3 liters a day or more. And I’m not talking about endurance athletes here either.

3 liters of water!

Can you imagine drinking that much? Chugging glass after glass all day, every day?

Don’t get me wrong, water is essential for our bodies. It helps flush toxins out, supports cognitive function, it helps hydrate our skin and even keep healthy blood pressure. Some people use water as a strategy to reduce weight. It is difficult to consume food if your stomach is filled with water after all. But the idea that there is a set amount of water that we need to drink daily is nothing but a scam.

First of all, the amount of water you need will differ daily depending on many factors. The amount of salt in food that you ate on the day, the weather outside (and inside), other drinks that you consumed, activity levels. Of course, if you are working out, you will need to drink more water. If it is hot outside, you will need more water. Same if you ate salty foods.

All of the above means that the amount of water you need to consume daily will depend on that day and not on some set amount.

Here’s another thing. Just drinking water can flush out electrolytes. These are essential and with electrolyte imbalance instead of hydrating, water will actually make you more dehydrated and can cause some very serious side effects.

What you can do is eat more fruit and vegetables as those tend to have plenty of water and nutrients to keep electrolytes in balance.

The verdict

If you feel thirsty, by all means, drink more. But you don’t have to force it down your throat just because someone said that you should. And if you are drinking a lot of water, maybe add a pinch of salt in it or a few slices of fruit for electrolyte balance.
